Backup GPT4

ChatGPT+ signups paused

As if to reinforce the point about how quickly things are moving in AI right now, a few days after dropping the AI equivalent of the App Store, Open AI paused new sign-ups for ChatGPT+. This was apparently to ensure the level of service for existing users. Then on Friday afternoon, Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI was sacked by the board. The story continues to evolve and this will likely be part of a Netflix drama in a few months.

One of the key recommendations from the AI Accelerator is (currently) to get a ChatGPT+ account. It is one of the best value tools you can get access to and will change the way you work, however with that not currently possible, what are your options to get access to the power of GPT4?

Alternative Models:

While Googles Bard is still freely available, its results can be haphazard at best.

Bing offers free access to GPT4, but seems to be more interested in serving you search results and advertising than actually helping you.

Anthropic's Claude2 is a very strong model, while not quite as smart at GPT4, does offer a huge context window and free access, so is worth a look.

API Access:

You can still sign up for an API key for Open AI. This gives you access to all of the Open AI Large Language Models along with a whole lot more.

Using your API key is simpler than you might think. You can use it with services like Huggingface, Typing Mind, or GPT4ALL - just input your API key, and you're set to go.

Remember not to share your API key with anyone apart from services you have confidence in and be sure to set usage limits to make sure you don’t overspend.

3rd Party Services:

You can use services such as Poe to get your GPT4 fix. You have to pay the 3rd party provider, but you can get access to more models and a load of other functionality. This is a great interim option while you are waiting for access to ChatGPT+.

Private / Hosted Solutions:

You can set-up and configure a private LLM using GPT4ALL from Nomic, with acces to some amazing free models, but they aren’t quite on par with GPT4.

Alternatively you can go for a Microsoft Azure hosted OPen AI instance, which is private and fantastic for corporate use, but gets expensive very quickly and can be more complex to configure for multiple users.

Whichever service you opt for, once you begin understanding the power of Large Language Models, you will want to have a backup option. Once you’ve tasted the future it’s hard to go back and with the speed at which the market is moving, having multiple options available to you is critical.
